    Pré-requis :
Prerequisites: Know the basic principles of photonic microscopy (including bright field, epifluorescence, confocal microscopy), and electron microscopy (transmission and scanning). Validating M1 "Imagerie Fonctionnelle" course (for BMC Master students) is useful but not not mandatory, because films and documents will be provided to catch up on the prerequisites before the start of the course. M1 students from the international Master in Life Sciences will be taught the prerequisites in their main program.
    Compétences attestées (transversales, spécifiques) :
After this course, students should be able to:
- understand the principles of various basic and advanced microscopy techniques
- be able to choose imaging techniques adapted to a biological question
- understand what are the current breakthroughs in the field of microscopy
- be familiar with local imaging platforms equipments
    Programme de l'UE / Thématiques abordées :

Aim: Imaging techniques are essential in many fields of biology and rapidly evolving. This course will help students design imaging approaches adapted to a biological question and to a given model of study.

Content: The course provides an overview of cutting-edge bio-imaging approaches. After introducing basic physical principles of microscopy, we address the application domains and observation potentials of various techniques, through lectures, scientific articles, research seminars, and technical demonstration workshops. Topics include: fluorescent reporters, electron (cryo)microscopy, superresolution, light-sheet microscopy, multiphoton microscopy, tissue clearing, small animal imaging, tomography and correlative microscopy.

NB: The course is taught in English. It does not involve any manipulation of microscopes (with some exceptions), and does not address image processing or interpretation.
