    Pré-requis :

Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of immunology at least 6 ects and basic knowledge of neurology at least 6 ects (flipped classroom available).

    Compétences attestées (transversales, spécifiques) :

(Transversal) Researcher - Development and integration of highly specialized theoretical knowledge

Mobilize highly specialized knowledge, some of which is at the forefront of knowledge in a field of work or study, as the basis for original thought.
Develop a critical awareness of knowledge in a field and/or at the interface of several fields.
Solve problems to develop new knowledge and new procedures and integrate knowledge from different fields.
Conduct fundamental or finalized research projects in the field of molecular and cellular biology.
Make innovative contributions in high-level exchanges, and in international contexts.

(Specific) Learning outcomes: The student gains theoretical and practical insights in inflammatory, infectious and/or autoimmune neuro-immunological disorders with an emphasis on pathogenesis and research development for diagnosis and treatments.

- Neuro-immunology knowledge: the student can describe neuro-infections, immune-mediated neuropathies, neuro-inflammations, has insights in the epidemiology of these diseases, can interpret measures to diagnose or correct these diseases, explain how biological mechanisms cause these diseases and acquire a comprehensive overview of the field.

- Future: the student can discuss recent scientific advances in autoimmunity, infection and inflammation of the central nervous system, analyse and understand the manipulations of various animal models in this context.

- Practical skills: the student can develop his English proficiency, speed-reading capacities, listening, writing and oral presenting skills, and interactivity in scientific questioning.

Program: this teaching unit, in English, builds on students' basic neurology and immunology knowledge to develop fundamental research concepts in neuro-immunology that have applications in clinical and pharmaceutical research in the field of neuro-inflammatory, neuro-degenerative and neuro-infectious diseases. The topics will be:

1) Cellular and molecular biology of the central nervous system immune responses; definitions of neuro-inflammatory, neurodegenerative and neuro-infectious diseases

2) Immuno-pathological mechanisms, animal models and therapeutic strategies in:

- autoimmune neuro-inflammatory pathologies: multiple sclerosis and related pathologies, myasthenia and pathologies of the neuromuscular junction, dysimmune neuropathies
- neurodegenerative diseases with an inflammatory component: Alzheimer, prion diseases, narcolepsy
- the "emerging fields": the contribution of the immune system in Parkinson's disease, stroke, epilepsy

 3) The contribution of the immune system to infectious encephalitis

Speakers:

Pedagogical team of immunology and neurology of the University of Lyon, UFR Biosciences, Faculty of Medicine of Lyon East and South. Conferences on news items will be organized. The speakers will be invited on the basis of their notoriety.
