This course aims to highlight the physical principles which play important roles at several scales of biological systems (molecules, cells and tissues) and which are necessary for the understanding of numerous biological processes and the development of new model systems. It will allow students:
-Know how to count the forces present, understand the role of fluctuations and molecular transport;
-Estimate the associated orders of magnitude (biology by numbers);
of the
- Be able to understand the ingredients of mathematical models;
-Know how to estimate a measurement error
Mechanical properties of cells and tissues
Transport properties of biological systems
Some tutorials based on case studies from scientific papers will be proposed for each part.
The practical implementation of the methods will be illustrated by a series of practical laboratory work in pairs:
1- Macro-AFM indenter to estimate the stiffness of hydrogels (Oscillators, Hooke and Hertz laws of mechanics)
2- Brownian motion and analysis of molecular diffusion (Einstein law of diffusion)
