This programme receives the support of the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union: a grant of € 3,934,000 was awarded to the LIVE consortium.
The Master LIVE (Erasmus+ Mundus Joint Master Degrees) offers an interesting multi- and inter-disciplinary academic programme in a very dynamic research area. The consortium involves a number of non-educational associated partners which are engaged with the programme delivery and management in a variety of activities. The Associate Partners from the whole vaccinology chain include SMEs, pharmaceutical organisations and large companies that cover all the different areas where graduate students can be employed. The industrial actors offer funding which strengthens the sustainability of the programme beyond EU funding. The proposal addresses current need of the society in preparing specialists in fundamental and applied aspects of vaccinology capable of continuing their career in academia or industry or healthcare sector.

The LIVE students will be trained in Barcelona at semester 1 (S1) with the students registered at the national master called “Advanced Immunology”. The S1 programme is composed of a first specialisation in immunology and immunopathology: 8 core scientific courses (27 ECTS) and 1 language course (3 ECTS). The specialisation in immunology and immunopathology will be acquired through the 8 teaching units called: Innate immunity (3ECTS), Functional anatomy of the immune system (3ECTS), Antigen recognition (3ECTS), Receptor signalling (3ECTS), Mechanisms of immunopathology (3ECTS), Autoimmunity (3ECTS), Immunodeficiencies (3ECTS) and Immune response to pathogens (including HIV and Malaria) (6ECTS). Note that it is possible on this site to sign up for the course “Training course in laboratory animal science” in addition to the LIVE programme.
The LIVE students will be trained in Antwerp at semester 2 (S2) with a programme aligned with the students registered at the national master called “Leading International Vaccinology Education”. The S2 programme is composed of a second specialisation in infectiology: 3 core scientific courses (12 ECTS) and 1 course (3 ECTS) in advanced immunology, 3 courses (9 ECTS) in research & clinical vaccinology, 1 language course (3 ECTS) and 1 optional course (3 ECTS) to choose between languages or e-learning animal science. The specialisation in Infectiology will be acquired through the 3 teaching units called: Description & variability of pathogens (6 ECTS), Host-pathogen interactions (3 ECTS) and Clinical drug research (3ECTS). Advanced immunology will describe the specificities of the Immune system in new-borns, pregnant women and elderly (3 ECTS). The students will benefit from the skills of the GSK Belgian production site to start their knowledge in vaccinology with the teaching units: Novel technology, vaccine administration (3 ECTS) and vaccine manufacturing and quality control process (3 ECTS). Then they will participate to a high quality overview of vaccinology, during the summer school of vaccinology, yearly organized in Antwerp, before delving into details at the next semester. The 6 last ECTS are dedicated to train the students in languages and e-learning animal science for those who desire.
The LIVE programme is run by Université Lyon 1 Claude Bernard (Coordinating University in France), University Jean Monnet Saint-Etienne (France), University of Antwerp (Belgium), Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (Spain) and Universitat de Barcelona (Spain). This master is an outstanding level academic programme in Vaccinology with a special emphasis on employability of the graduated international students, in agreement with our numerous international associated partners from the whole world of chain in Vaccinology: higher education institutions, foundations and other organisations around Vaccinology, research centres, small and medium size companies, big pharma companies and clinical centres in developed and developing countries. This diploma is designed for students who have done their undergraduate studies of at least 180 ECTS in the fields of medical or veterinary or life sciences. Students in the field of health (doctors, pharmacists, veterinarians) have access to full e-learning teaching units when they run mandatory health internships due to the constraints of their dual medical and scientific training. In agreement with the Bachelor, Master, Doctorate (BMD) diploma system in place in Europe, LIVE is composed of 4 semesters of 30 ECTS (European Credits Transfer System) each, for a total assessment of 120 ECTS.
The students will study at higher level a first specialisation in immunology and immunopathology in Barcelona, then a second specialisation in infectiology including microbiology, virology and host-pathogen interactions in Antwerp and a third specialisation in vaccinology in Lyon/ Saint-Etienne, to reach the level for doing a master thesis.
