Eco-design is an approach aimed at reducing the environmental impact of a mechanical system from the design stage onwards. It raises scientific questions concerning improvements at each of the main stages of a system’s life cycle.
The course first examines the challenges faced by industry, the products concerned, regulatory requirements and applicable standards. It then presents an eco-design methodology and several examples of its application, demonstrating that eco-design can both reduce the environmental impact of products and often lead to innovative product designs.
Students will apply the concepts covered in the course to a lightweight-design challenge, either in structural mechanics or fluid mechanics, depending on their specialisation. The challenge will be completed in pairs.
Lightweight structures are ingeniously designed to provide strength and durability while minimising material use, thereby offering cost-effective and sustainable solutions in modern engineering. These structures, frequently used in aerospace, automotive engineering and architecture, employ advanced materials such as carbon fibre and aluminium alloys to achieve an excellent strength-to-weight ratio. Understanding lightweight structures is essential for innovation in design and technology and helps improve performance across various fields of mechanical engineering.
