The University Lyon 1 hosts the Graduate School H2O'Lyon, which focuses on freshwater sciences and brings together more than 10 academic partners (about 250 researchers from 13 research units).
It is a creative environment where researchers from different disciplines co-design and co-deliver research with stakeholders. Master's students will benefit from this expertise during their studies and can join the dynamic community of PhD students.
Freshwater has become a highly limited, critical resource and increasing anthropogenic demands often create conflicts with water quality- and availability-requirements of natural hydrosystems.
The IWS master program will enable students to fully understand the threats to both natural and anthropogenic hydrosystems and develop their skills to create and implement innovative, holistic solutions.
The teaching is developed and conducted by expert researchers and national and international partners. Courses will combine teaching methods, such as lectures, practicals, group exercises, field-based work, student presentations as well as completion of an independent research project of 6 months (Master thesis).
The IWS specialisation is open to students at the University of Lyon enrolled in 7 master program : Biodiversity, Ecology, Evolution; Microbiology; Environmental Management; Risks and Environment; Water Sciences; Geomatics; Process and Bioprocess Engineering.
The first semester offers courses and training on the Theory of inter-disciplinary, Application to complex issues in water sciences, Fundamentals and technics for solving water-related problems, and Professional tools, such as scientific communication and project management.
During the second semester students from different disciplines will form clusters around trans-disciplinary research questions to address complex real-world issues that go well beyond their individual expertise. Each student will work on facets of the question that are related to its specific discipline, while collaborating with other students in its cluster.
You are an eligible applicant for year 2 of a Master programme.
Applicant must have :
- A relevant field for the Master degree programme that you’re applying to.- A B2 English level (TOIEC > 785, TOEFL > 72, IELTS > 5.5, Cambridge LINGUASKILL >160, Cambridge FCE > 160, CLES 2). The English language test is not required for applicants who have A Bachelor degree from an institution with English as language of instruction.
- Completed at least 4 months of international mobility during Year 1 of their Master degree or during their Bachelor. The international mobility requirement is not mandatory for foreign students who come to Lyon.
Students are being prepared for a career in fundamental or applied research, water conservation, management and policy at different regional, national, international levels that are associated with their own areas of expertise (e.g., ecology, geomatics, water, environment and risk management, engineering sciences). Possible employment will include positions such as Project Manager, Research Scientist, Policy Analyst …
In contrast to traditional water-sciences programs, the H2O’Lyon IWS programme has a strong emphasis on inter-, cross- and trans-disciplinarity and the development of communication tools. Freshwater issues are no longer subject-specific. Therefore, knowledge and understanding of related disciplines will not only be crucial for finding innovative, holistic solutions to current and future threats, but will also increase professional skills, employability and job satisfaction.
