A large panel of genetic diseases affecting the nervous system and/or muscles has been identified to date. Commonly these disorders have a high impact on health and affect many people worldwide. As a consequence, important efforts are spent in research aiming at characterizing the function of the nervous and muscular system and to understand the mechanisms involved in these different diseases in order to develop efficient treatments.
This teaching unit will provide an introduction of the nervous and neuromuscular system with a particular focus on the biology of (moto)neurons and muscles, in human and model organisms. Recent discoveries of molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in disorders will be discussed along with the development of efficient therapies. Part of the courses will be based on scientific seminars given in English by scientists working on neuronal and/or muscular functions and pathologies in institutes of Lyon.
Each seminar will be followed by a discussion so as to stimulate exchanges between students and scientists, and encourage students to ask scientific questions. This teaching unit will require a significant amount of personal work to produce a small research project.
