    Pré-requis et objectifs :
  • Language of instruction: English. The course is taught entirely in English, all teaching materials are in English, and all assessments take place in English.
  • Prerequisites: Mathematical Tools for Engineers 1 (I3003ME), Basic Numerical Methods (I3010ME), Continuum Mechanics (I3011ME), Fluid Mechanics 1 (I3012ME), Heat Transfer and Environmental Challenges (I3015ME), Fluid Mechanics 2 (I3018ME), Mathematical Tools for Engineers 2 (I3020ME), Numerical Methods for Mechanics 1 (I3021ME), Fluid Mechanics 3 (I4002ME), Numerical Methods for Mechanics 2 (I4007ME).
  • Co-requisites: Numerical Methods for Mechanics 3 (I5005ME), Physical Foundations of Turbulence (I5008ME).
  • Objectives: this course presents the fundamentals of the mathematical modelling of some canonical turbulent or laminar flows, for industrial, environmental or geophysical applications. By the end of the course, students will be able to:
    –      build a simplified model of a free or wall-bounded turbulent flow, using scaling analysis and the boundary layer approximation;
    –      close the Reynolds-averaged (RANS) equations with a simple model (eddy viscosity, mixing length);
    –      derive and use self-similar solutions (mixing layers, jets, plumes);
    –      estimate the associated heat or mass transfer;
    –     apply these concepts to the natural ventilation of buildings.
    Acquis intermédiaires d’apprentissage et compétences visés :

The competences developed in this course are:

Competences Level Critical learning outcomes
C2. Model physical phenomena in a mechanical system  N1. Analyse physical phenomena Apply a scientific approach to solving a problem.
  N2. Model fundamental physical phenomena  Select the appropriate equations to model the mechanical problem to be solved.
    Understand and analyse the partial differential equations, and their underlying assumptions, that model problems in the mechanics of materials, fluids and structures.
    Master the theoretical foundations of the analytical solution of simple differential equations.
    Process, analyse and interpret data from scientific models.
    Programme de l'UE / Thématiques abordées :
  • Canonical turbulent flows: free turbulent flows, such as mixing layers, jets, plumes and fountains. Introduction to the concept of turbulent entrainment; advanced case studies of transient, unsteady or confined flows.
  • Environmental, industrial or geophysical applications coupling flows with mass or heat transfer: we will study the coupling between the velocity field and heat or mass transfer in canonical turbulent flows and in boundary layers.
  • Application to natural ventilation in buildings: the fundamental concepts covered previously will be applied to understand flows in buildings, and the exchanges of air and heat between the inside and the outside.
  • Mathematical concepts covered: scaling analysis, Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations and the closure problem (eddy viscosity, mixing length), integral methods for turbulent flows, solution of systems of coupled differential equations, asymptotic methods for boundary layers, and self-similarity analysis.
Teaching materials
  • Lecture notes (in English)
  • Collection of exercises, with solutions to the exercises covered in tutorials (in English)
  • Past examination papers (in English) – No solutions given
    Méthodes d’évaluation :
  • Group mini-project, assessed by:
    • 1 report (10 to 20 pages, excluding front and back matter): 30% of the final mark;
    • 1 oral presentation (20 min presentation and 10 min questions): 30% of the final mark.
    • Final examination (1 h 30 min, one personal handwritten A4 sheet allowed): 40% of the final mark.
  • Final examination (1 h 30 min, one personal handwritten A4 sheet allowed): 40% of the final mark.
Use of generative AI in this course
  • Final examination – Level 1: no AI
    The assessment is carried out entirely without the use of AI, in a controlled environment, which ensures that you rely solely on your existing knowledge and skills, and on those developed in this course. You must not use AI at any point during your assessment. You must demonstrate that you have acquired the fundamental skills and knowledge at the level expected for this course.

  • Mini-project – Level 2: AI-assisted preparation
    AI may be used for preparatory tasks, such as generating ideas, structuring and initial research, for the mini-project only, as well as for translation and minor language corrections of the report. This level focuses on the effective use of AI for planning the work and synthesising ideas, but the assessment of the mini-project focuses on your ability to develop and refine your ideas independently. During the oral presentation, you must demonstrate full command of the knowledge and skills developed in this course.
